A Hindi romantic drama, Cheeni Kum tells the story of a man who is diagnosed with cancer just as his family prepares for his upcoming wedding. His preparations are interrupted by chemo-therapy, which leaves him bald and weak. As the dutiful son, he resists treatment to give his bride her dream wedding, but he knows he can't delay treatment forever. The film examines the role of tradition in Indian society and explores gender politics within both romantic relationships and familial relationships.The movie has been rated R due to sexual content including nudity, some graphic language and violence. It was released in theaters on March 28th 2008 by Yash Raj Films International Limited. The movie was screened at the following film festivals:"Cheeni Kum" has received favorable reviews. Vaihayasi Pande Daniel writing for "The Hindu" praises the film saying that it is "a pleasant surprise -- mainstream without being crass, serious without being self-important, funny but never crude." adding that "R Balki's first solo outing as a director is heart-warming rather than heart-breaking." Deepanjana Pal writing for "Mumbai Mirror" gives the film four out of five stars, calling it a "tribute to love and its many forms." Pal says that Balki's talent is his ability to deal with the soft subjects without coming across as self-righteous. Harsha Bhogle, while reviewing the movie stated that "Cheeni Kum" "is not an easy film to watch. The humour is unintentional at times, the emotions are real and the performances are beautifully understated by the whole cast." He added that "Cheeni Kum" "is essentially about love, loss and the struggle of a young man to struggle through his illness in order to be a better husband and a better human being." The film was a box office success in India. It performed well in cinemas across India and gave Yash Raj Films a huge boost in their sale of its tickets in Bollywood. The movie grossed over 150 million from its domestic collections. "Cheeni Kum" opened to an excellent response in the Overseas. The film grossed over $300,000 in its initial three days of release. It was acclaimed by the critics and the audience. The film was submitted for India's 2009 Oscars consideration by Yashraj Films International.
